Rare vacant land in Midtown eyed for permanent public space

Why it matters: Midtown might sit next door to Piedmont Park, sure. But the 770-acre business district has only 1.1 acres of protected public space, according to MID, which funds infrastructure projects in the neighborhood.

• The property — which has sat vacant since a developer's plans to build Atlanta's tallest residential tower on the site fizzled — is located between West Peachtree and Peachtree streets, across the street from the Four Seasons.

What they're saying: "Our leadership viewed this as a generational opportunity to preserve land forever and create a signature amenity for Midtown and our city," said Kurt Hartman, who chairs the MID.

• "Given the rapid rate Midtown has been developing, this was seen as now or never."

What's next: First, the sale has to close. After that, Midtown leaders would design the park and launch a capital campaign.
