The mixed-use redevelopment of the long-vacant site of Bowen Homes, once one of Atlanta's largest public housing complexes and the childhood home of the city's rap royalty, is moving forward.
Driving the news: Mayor Andre Dickens and city leaders yesterday broke ground on the $64 million first phase of a mixed-use megaproject that could create hundreds of affordable units.
Zoom in: Supported by a $40 million federal funding award, the project's first phase calls for 151 apartments. Roughly two-thirds of the units would be set aside for people and families living on low incomes.
The big picture: Atlanta Housing, the city's public housing authority, envisions 2,000 total housing units for rent or sale, access to fresh food, green spaces and walkable streets.
Catch up quick: Built in 1964, the roughly 650-unit community included a library and school. The housing authority demolished Bowen Homes in 2009; the land has sat vacant since.
Fun fact: Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad" video was filmed at Bowen Homes.
