As winter storms bring snow and ice to wide swaths of the U.S. this week, including north Georgia, it's worth a look back to see when your area set its all-time snowfall record.
How it works: NOAA captures snowfall maximums from each county, along with the exact measurement location.
Some locations shown as "no snow" in the map above may have had snow at some point, but to be included, the county data needed to show more than a trace amount.
Driving the news: As expected, counties in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains saw the most snowfall.
Stunning stat: Mountainous Murray County in northwest Georgia holds the state record for the largest amount of snowfall in a single day, with 20 inches on March 14, 1993.
The intrigue: A February 1973 snowstorm set recorded snowfall levels records in Middle Georgia counties that rivaled levels in northern areas and which still stand today.
