Jimmy Carter memorial services to begin Saturday in Atlanta

This weekend, memorial services will begin in Atlanta for former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100.
The latest: MARTA will provide an around-the-clock bus shuttle between the King Memorial Station and the Carter Presidential Center where the former president will lie in repose starting Saturday.
- The buses will depart the station continuously every three to five minutes starting at 6pm Saturday through 6am Tuesday, Jan. 7.
- Riders who want to use the shuttle must take the train to the King Memorial Station where MARTA also says rail service will operate around the clock.
- No public parking is available at the King station, but MARTA offers parking at other stations.

Carter's remains are expected to depart Plains at 10:55am Saturday, and the motorcade will arrive at the state Capitol at 3pm for a moment of silence.
- Afterward, the motorcade will transport his remains to the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, and from there the events are scheduled as follows:
- Ceremony at 3:45pm.
- Private service at 4pm.
- Public viewing beginning at 7pm on Saturday and continuing through 6am on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

On Tuesday morning, Carter's remains will be transferred to Dobbins Air Reserve Base where he will depart at 10:40am for Washington, D.C.
Once in D.C., Carter's casket will be placed in a horse-drawn wagon for a procession to the U.S. Capitol.
- Congress will hold a service at 3pm to pay their respects.
- Carter will then lie in state, with a public viewing from 7pm until midnight.
- Public viewing will resume at 7am Wednesday, Jan. 8 and run continuously until 7am Thursday, Jan. 9.
Carter's state funeral service will begin at 10am Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral.
- After the service, the Carter family will travel back to Georgia for a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
- His interment will also be closed to the public.
