Where (and how) to get on the ice in Atlanta

Ice skating! The holiday tradition when we conquer fears and fall down with loved ones has returned.

What to know: Coach Aren Nielsen, the figure skating director at the Atlanta Ice Forum, has some pearls of wisdom for those not blessed with balance.

⛸️ Tighten your laces: Nielsen, a U.S. champion skater, often sees the public lace their skates loose. Tight laces mean more control.

😎 Stay loose-ish: People tend to stiffen once they start gliding. "Soft knees and ankles actually help absorb your body weight," he said.

🤝 Golden (rink) rule: Every skating rink has a flow of traffic. Mix in and be mindful of fellow skaters as you get comfortable.

Where to get on the ice

Atlantic Station's Skate the Station boasts that it features Atlanta's largest outdoor rink. Theme nights feature glow skating and ugly sweaters.

Sandy Springs' Skate City Springs returns for a second year. Zambonis roll every hour.

The event includes a loyalty program offering a buy five sessions, get one free deal for $50.

Ponce City Market's rooftop rink includes Santa visits every Sunday.

You can also book a heated igloo that seats up to six people where you can order food and drinks. You can reserve that as well as skate time online.
