Rivian could get $6 billion federal loan to resume building Georgia plant

• It promised 7,500 new jobs and received a $1.5 billion tax incentive package.
• When in March Rivian submitted an Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it was pausing those plans, it was unclear what that meant for the company's future in Georgia.

Driving the news: Rivian is set to receive a $5.98 billion conditional loan from the U.S. Department of Energy, the agency and Sen. Jon Ossoff announced Tuesday.

• The loan, which Ossoff said is funded through the Inflation Reduction Act, would allow Rivian to resume building the 9 million-square-foot facility the company will use to manufacture up to 400,000 midsized vehicles and SUVs annually.

Zoom in: A Rivian spokesperson said construction would start "on a timeline consistent with our planned start of production in 2028."

• Up to 2,000 full-time jobs would be created during the construction process, and once complete, the plant would have 7,500 jobs by 2030.

What they're saying: Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said the company is excited about "this important chapter in our growth."

• "We are grateful for our strong partnerships in Georgia and will continue to work closely with them as we bring this landmark facility to life," he said.

Garrison Douglas, a spokesperson for Gov. Brian Kemp, said in a statement that the state will work with Rivian to help it fulfill its commitment to "creating good-paying jobs for hardworking Georgians."

• "Our conversations to bring their operations to the No. 1 state for business predates the current administration in Washington, and our shared vision to bring opportunity to Georgia will remain no matter who resides in the White House or what party controls Congress," he said.

What's next: Rivian and the Department of Energy will begin work to finalize the loan agreement.
