Georgia Supreme Court blocks election rules reinstatement

• The rules, passed by the state board of election's Republican appointees earlier this year, would've required poll workers to hand-count ballots and county officials to conduct a "reasonable inquiry" into vote counting before certifying results won't take effect this election.

Catch up quick: On Oct. 17, lawyers representing state and national Republicans filed an emergency notice of appeal with the court after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cox ruled that seven new measures approved by the GOP majority bloc were "illegal, unconstitutional and void."

What they're saying: "I'm excited for election workers who have been expressing relief that they won't have to implement these eleventh-hour rules changes," Scot Turner, a plaintiff in the lawsuit and former Republican state representative, told the AJC.

• "The point of the lawsuit has always been to restore the separation of powers and to make sure the Legislature has supremacy over election law and to make sure unelected appointees were not making new law."
