The race to succeed Joe Biden as the 47th president remains close, but a new Atlanta Journal-Constitution/University of Georgia poll shows former President Trump with a slight edge over Vice President Kamala Harris in the Peach State.
Why it matters: Trump leads Harris 47% to 43%, outside the margin of error of 3.1%, among the 1,000 likely voters in Georgia who participated in the poll.
- 8% of those surveyed said they are still undecided with two weeks to go before Election Day.
What they're saying: UGA political scientist Trey Hood told the AJC that "neither side has this in the bag."
- "And that makes the next two weeks even more important," said Hood, who oversaw the poll, conducted Oct. 7-16.
Zoom in: According to the AJC poll, 74% of Black voters said they would vote for Harris, while 8% said they planned to vote for Trump.
- Yes, but: Nearly 18% Black voters are undecided.
- 66% of white voters backed Trump, compared with 28% who voiced support for Harris. About 4% are undecided.
There's a gender divide, with 59% of men say they will support Trump compared with 55% of women supporting Harris.
- Roughly 11% of men remain undecided, compared with just 6% of women surveyed.
Trump received 95% of support from voters who identified as Republican and 80% from conservatives while Harris received around 88% each from voters who were either liberal or Democrats.
The big picture: Today's poll numbers come about a month after another AJC/UGA poll showed both candidates were virtually tied in the race for the White House.
What we're watching: Heading into the presidential election, 60% of voters said they believed the country is on the wrong track, compared with 28% who said it's on the right path.
- 19% say inflation and the cost of living are their top issues.
- Rounding out the top five were the economy/jobs (17%), preserving democracy (17%), immigration (14%) and abortion (8%).
