👋 Editor Jen here.
To celebrate Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday, I thought I'd try my hand at this dessert named after the former president.
Zoom in: The Jimmy Carter Cake is not really a cake, nor does it have any official tie to him, according to Southern Living.
But it does contain peanuts, so that's probably where the name comes from.
Dig in: It starts with a part graham cracker, part peanut crust; next, a layer of Cool Whip mixed with peanut butter; then a layer of straight-up chocolate pudding; finally, another layer of Cool Whip, thicker this time in order to satisfy the minimum amount legally required for a Southern dessert recipe.
For good measure, it's topped with crushed peanuts and some milk chocolate chips.
The verdict: Well, it certainly has its roots in Southern culture.
This treat is made to be served on a Styrofoam plate at a Baptist church potluck. If you know, you know.
