St. Simons Island is the champion of Axios Atlanta's best beaches near Atlanta bracket, edging past Hilton Head Island in the final with 60.9% of our readers' votes.
State of play: St. Simons Island is a weekend trip's drive away from metro Atlanta and roughly 280 miles southeast of Atlanta.
- Roughly 12 miles long and one of Georgia's largest barrier islands, this destination has several attractions, including its wide beaches, ancient forests, shops, and museums like the St. Simons Island Lighthouse.
