The city of Kennesaw has ordered the owner of a popular treehouse vacation rental to demolish the structure because the required permits were not issued to operate the facility.

The latest: Ryan McGovern, owner of Treasure Hunt Treehouse, told the Cobb County Courier he operated the structure for five years until an anonymous complaint was filed last month with the city.

  • Axios reached out to McGovern for comment, but did not hear back.

A city spokesperson told Axios that Kennesaw officials received a complaint on March 17 of an unpermitted structure on Galt Place NW.

  • The city said it determined that the electrical, plumbing or building permits needed to operate an accessory dwelling unit on the property were not obtained.
  • This meant that the treehouse "would not have previously been inspected," the city said.
  • McGovern has 30 days to apply for a demolition permit from the city and move ahead with removing the structure within 30 days of getting the permit.

What they're saying: McGovern told the Courier that the treehouse, which had hundreds of five-star reviews, generated $75,000 annually and that revenue was the main source of income for the family.

  • He also asked Kennesaw's elected officials to intervene to no avail.

What's next: McGovern told WSB-TV that he's canceled all future reservations and issued several thousand dollars in refunds to prospective customers.

  • He also told 11Alive that he's now considering filing for bankruptcy.
  • The treehouse is no longer listed on Airbnb's property.
