What's happening: A fresh literary magazine, The Miami Native, launched this month with an online edition and a collectible-quality print version.

It includes long-form, magazine-style articles and essays, plus fiction, poetry, a gossip-type column called "Chisme" and more.

Why it matters: The publication aims to capture the city's spirit, intelligence and sense of humor through a mix of highbrow, middlebrow and lowbrow content.

"Reading is supposed to be something that gives your life pleasure, that enlivens your day-to-day, your routines, eases your suffering," editor-in-chief Grazie Sophia Christie tells Axios.

Driving the news: Christie grew up in Miami, studied English at Harvard and lived in London. There, she was introduced to Ginevra Lily Davis, who had been studying at a Stanford University program in Paris but was moving to Miami.

They noticed Miami was teeming with smart, creative people who were building brands and making art. They set out to found a magazine that could become a cultural institution and define the city as a literary capital.

"Miami is sometimes like the Wild West, where you can start something that really should obviously exist and doesn't," Christie says.

Zoom out: "There's been a huge revival of print magazines in New York, particularly started by young women," Davis tells Axios, citing The Drift, The Drunken Canal, Forever Magazine and Heavy Traffic.

What they're saying: "We want, of course, erudite New York intellectuals who are here to think that our magazine is so smart," says Christie.

Yes, but: The editors also hope it will reflect the lives of, and be read by, a wide swath of locals: "the girl coming back from the farmers market, or the man who works 14-hour days and picks this up for his family, for them to read the astrology and laugh around the dinner table," Christie says.

The editors are seeking submissions from writers and artists for upcoming issues and are keen to publish diverse voices, including writers who have never been published before.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will debate California Gov. Gavin Newsom Thursday night in a red state vs. blue state showdown long in the making.

Why it matters: DeSantis, a Republican, is running for president but has struggled to separate himself in the GOP primary field as the top challenger to former President Trump.

Newsom is not running, but he is seen as a surrogate for the Biden administration.

Context: Primary elections to determine the 2024 presidential nominees are coming up in Iowa and New Hampshire in January.

Recently, DeSantis has been dropping in polls, with likely voters indicating they'd prefer Trump as the Republican nominee. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has gained support.

What they're saying: Thursday night's debate will be moderated by Sean Hannity, who is a conservative ally of Trump, but told Politico he would to be fair to both debaters.

"I'm into mixed martial arts and anybody that steps into the octagon, I have deep respect for because you're stepping into a war," he said.

The intrigue: Newsom challenged DeSantis to a debate more than a year ago and has been one of DeSantis' fiercest critics on the national stage.

It's unusual for a non-candidate to debate a candidate, but Newsom is seen as likely to run for the presidency in the future, and Thursday night's event could raise his profile among voters nationwide.

In previous interviews with Hannity, he has emphasized commonalities with right-leaning voters. "I want border security," he said, comparing his outlook to Ronald Reagan's.

Newsom called DeSantis a "small, pathetic man" after he orchestrated flights that sent migrants to Democratic enclaves.

Yes, but: DeSantis has blamed "woke ideology" for a decline in the quality of life in left-leaning cities such as San Francisco, saying they have problems with drugs, homelessness and crime.

DeSantis's campaign manager James Uthmeier told the Los Angeles Times, "A Newsom presidency would accelerate America's decline and Nov. 30 will be the first chance to expose a national audience to just how dangerous his radical ideology would be for the country."

If you watch: The debate will air on Fox News and be streamed on Fox News Radio at 9pm.

It's taking place in a studio in Georgia, with no audience.

Warming temperatures are changing where and when different plant varieties can grow most successfully, as reflected in a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) map released this month, Axios' Jacque Schrag reports.

What's happening: The Plant Hardiness Zone Map is a kind of bible for farmers and gardeners, helping them understand which plants can thrive in their area and when to plant them. The map has been updated for the first time since 2012.

The map divides the U.S. into 13 zones, each representing a range of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Each zone is divided further into two 5-degree half zones.

The new map shifts about half of the country to the next warmer half zone, TCPalm explains. Those parts of the country warmed 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Details: David Whitwam with Whitwam Organics told Tampa's Fox 13 that the map is based on data measuring an area's coldest temperatures, not its hottest ones.

The new zones are based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature from 1991–2020.

The previous map, released in 2012, was based on 1976–2005 data.

"The annual extreme minimum temperature represents the coldest night of the year, which can be highly variable from year to year, depending on local weather patterns," per the USDA.

Zoom in: The new map puts South Florida in hotter zones.

An online tool allows users to check a zone by ZIP code.

What they're saying: Most of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties formerly fell into Zones 10A and 10B. Edible South Florida editor Gretchen Schmidt tells Axios, "Now we are 11A along the coast and 10B inland, where many of the commercial growers' crops are located."

Growers are watching to see whether and how crop viability changes. For example, breadfruit typically only fruits in the Lower Keys and can't survive a cold snap further north, Schmidt says.

Yes, but: Some changes in the map are the result of more advanced mapping methods and data collection.

Many factors influence whether a given plant grows successfully or not, including light, soil moisture, humidity and exposure to the elements.

The map reflects that some areas were relabeled as colder zones.

There's been a staggering decline in the number of trips Americans take by walking, per a new report from StreetLight Data, which measures travel behavior based on anonymized data from mobile devices, vehicle GPS systems and more.

What's happening: Nationally, the number of annual average daily "walking trips" (traveling roughly 820 feet or more on foot) dropped a whopping 36% in the contiguous U.S. between 2019 and 2022, Alex Fitzpatrick and Kavya Beheraj report.

Zoom in: Locally, the number dropped 32.4% in that time frame.

In the Miami metro, there were 250 annual average daily walking trips per 1,000 people in 2022, compared to 370 in 2019.

Zoom out: New York City ranks highest among the top 50 U.S. metro areas for walking trips at 390. Orlando (350), Las Vegas (320) and San Diego (320) follow.

Portland, Oregon; Boise, Idaho; and Ogden, Utah, are all tied for last place, at just 220 trips per 1,000 people.
