Far-right British commentator Katie Hopkins in London, England, in 2019. Photo: Luke Dray/Getty Images

Far-right British commentator Katie Hopkins was being deported from Australia Monday after boasting about breaching the country's pandemic rules.

Of note: New South Wales police said in a statement they helped the Australian Border Force transfer a 46-year-old U.K.-bound woman, later identified as Hopkins, to Sydney International Airport and issued her with an AU$1000 fine ($737) for breaching hotel quarantine rules by not wearing a face covering.

Why it matters: While in mandatory hotel quarantine in Sydney, Hopkins posted a since-deleted video online in which she railed against lockdowns and joked about breaching the rules by answering the door naked and maskless to people delivering her meals.

What they're saying: The producers of the TV show "Big Brother VIP" and the Seven Network said in a statement Sunday that Hopkins would not appear on the program and they "strongly condemn her irresponsible and reckless comments in hotel quarantine."

  • Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation earlier Monday that Hopkins' visa had been canceled overnight and officials would be "getting her out of the country" as soon as arrangements could be made.

Flashback: Hopkins' predominantly Islamophobic Twitter messages were amplified by former President Trump before she was banned by the platform for violating its hateful conduct policy.

Editor's note: This article has been updated with further details on Hopkins' deportation and fine.

Louisiana's statewide mask mandate is lifting for all settings except for some schools starting on Wednesday, Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) announced.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday announced a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for businesses, as the government pushes to reach a nationwide 90% vaccination target.

Why it matters: Under the new COVID-19 Protection Framework, businesses must require vaccine certificates from customers if they're in close contact with them. Ardern said at a briefing Tuesday that such venues wishing to operate, including hair salons, bars, restaurants and gyms, must ensure staff is vaccinated.

New York City police union files lawsuit against vaccine mandate

New York City's biggest police union filed a lawsuit Monday against Mayor Bill de Blasio's COVID-19 vaccine requirement for all NYC public employees.

Why it matters: The mandate requires all city employees to have had at least one dose by this Friday. They must show proof of vaccination or they'll be placed on unpaid leave. The Police Benevolent Association of New York tweeted Monday that it's seeking a temporary restraining order to halt the mandate, pending the outcome of its lawsuit.
