Former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown is headed back to Capitol Hill after flipping a hotly contested seat by ousting Sen. Jon Husted (R), the AP projects.

Why it matters: Ohio is a key pickup for Democrats in their quest to wrest control of the Senate, with both parties sending in big names to campaign in the state and pouring out their war chests to try to secure the seat.

Republicans spent upward of $200 million on advertising in the Buckeye State to defend Husted.

But the cash cascade, unlike last cycle when Sen. Bernie Moreno (R) first ousted Brown, ultimately didn't pay off.

Catch up quick: The closely watched prognosticator Cook Political Report ranked the race a toss-up in April, shifting the seat from leaning toward Republicans.

Friction point: Ohio helped fuel Trump's political comeback and launched Vice President Vance into national politics. But this cycle, Republicans were sweating — and pouring big money — in what had recently been a reliably red state.

Brown's name recognition as a three-term senator and potent attacks labeling Husted "the face of data centers in Ohio" were a source of heartburn for Republicans.
The GOP's Senate campaign arm warned that the data-center-related attacks were working, given Americans' toxic views of the power behind the AI boom, Axios' Alex Isenstadt previously reported. Ohio is home to several large data center projects.
