The window for last-minute Christmas shopping is narrowing — both in stores and online.
The big picture: Christmas Eve brings reduced hours for most retailers, followed by full store closings on Christmas Day for many of the nation's largest chains, including Walmart, Best Buy and Macy's.
Why it matters: For many consumers, this year's Christmas shopping crunch is about more than the calendar.
- Household budgets are stretched, and last-minute purchases often cost more and carry higher delivery fees.
Christmas Eve same-day delivery and pickup
Major retailers are offering same-day pickup with varying deadlines and on-demand companies including Instacart, Shipt, DoorDash and Uber are also delivering Wednesday.
- Amazon says it has millions of items available for same-day delivery through Christmas Eve in over 9,000 cities and towns across the U.S.
- Some on-demand companies are also delivering on Christmas Day but it depends on what retailers and restaurants are open.
