Trump is Time's 2024 "Person of the Year"

Time magazine named President-elect Trump as its "2024 Person of the Year" on Thursday.

The big picture: Presidential-election winners are often the honorees, and although Time rarely picks the same person twice, Trump was also selected in 2016.

He follows several past presidents — including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush — to be named twice.

Driving the news: TIME hailed Trump's "political rebirth" as "unparalleled" in U.S. history in the person of the year cover story.

The magazine also noted Trump appeared "more subdued, less verbose" during the interview conducted shortly before Thanksgiving than during his previous interview with the magazine earlier this year.
The president-elect is set to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday morning to mark the occasion.

Zoom out: The magazine's shortlist included others in politics: Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Britain's Princess of Wales Kate Middleton, Russian economist and opposition leader Yulia Navalnaya and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

In business and entertainment, there was Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Fed chair Jay Powell and podcaster Joe Rogan.

Flashback: In 2023, Taylor Swift was named Time magazine's person of the year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky won in 2022, Elon Musk in 2021 and President Biden and Vice President Harris in 2020.
