Latin American leaders react to Trump victory

State of play: Trump has suggested he might invade or bomb Mexico, the U.S.' biggest trade partner, to fight drug cartels. Still, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday stressed she aims to maintain good communication channels with the U.S.

• "We've already underlined that when it comes to migration, flow to the shared border has fallen by 75% and there is coordination, same when it comes for issues like the flow of drugs or weapons… I trust the dialogue for this will continue," said Sheinbaum.
• When asked by Noticias Telemundo about Trump's promised mass deportations, Sheinbaum referred to supporting "our (Mexican) sisters and brothers that live in the U.S." by strengthening consular activities with legal advice.

Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who's centered much of his foreign and national policy on tackling the effects of climate change, said "working together for peace, development and prosperity" would be top of mind for U.S. relations once Trump takes office in January.

• Other leftist leaders in the region like Honduran President Xiomara Castro and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo expressed well wishes for Trump.
• "We hope to continue working to strengthen our bonds for the shared principles and causes that have defined our diplomatic relations for 175 years," Arévalo said.

Leaders from Argentina and El Salvador were more enthusiastic.

• Presidents Javier Milei and Nayib Bukele, respectively, rule with brash styles and social media boasts in the vein of Trump.
• Bukele did not wait for results to keep trickling in to congratulate Trump around midnight, before Pennsylvania had been called and before Trump declared victory.
• Milei, who many have compared to Trump, congratulated him on his "formidable electoral victory."

Between the lines: Regimes with poor U.S. relations, such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, had not reacted to the news about the U.S. election on Wednesday.

• Politicians in the three countries have been heavily sanctioned by both the previous Trump administration and by the Biden administration, a trend likely to continue.
