Judge grants Trump request to delay immunity filing in Jan. 6 case

Former President Trump's lawyers' request to delay their response to special counsel Jack Smith's immunity motion in his 2020 election subversion case was granted by a federal judge on Monday.

The big picture: The Republican presidential nominee's team cited Hurricane Milton "displacing and severely disrupting" several of his Florida lawyers earlier this month as a reason they requested deadline extensions.

Consequently, Judge Tanya Chutkan granted the request to extend the deadlines from Nov. 7 to Nov. 21 and from Nov. 21 to Dec. 19, respectively.

Context: Smith in a Sept. 26 filing outlined legal arguments for criminally prosecuting Trump over efforts to overturn the 2020 election results after the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court ruled that presidents have immunity for "official acts."
