Justice Jackson laments Trump immunity ruling in new CBS interview

• "I was concerned about a system that appeared to provide immunity for one individual under one set of circumstances when we have a criminal justice system that had ordinarily treated everyone the same," Jackson told CBS News' Norah O'Donnell in an interview that will air in full Sunday.

Catch up quick: The Supreme Court sided with Trump in July by ruling that presidents have immunity for "official acts."

• "The court has now declared for the first time in history that the most powerful official in the United States can (under circumstances yet to be fully determined) become a law unto himself," Jackson wrote in a dissent.

The latest: Smith filed a superseding indictment on Tuesday against Trump, a slimmed down version of his original charges in the federal Jan. 6 case.

• The new indictment was presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in the case.
• Smith removed allegations related to Trump's efforts to compel the Justice Department to back false claims that the election had been stolen.

Zoom out: The court's decision put Trump's other criminal court cases in limbo, too.

• Trump's legal team asked to dismiss his criminal conviction in the New York hush money case, following the SCOTUS decision.

What's next: Jackson told CBS News she's "as prepared as anyone can be" for the results of November's presidential election to end up before the Supreme Court.

• "There are legal issues that arise out of the political process and so the Supreme Court has to be prepared to respond if that should be necessary," she said.
