Trump thrills GOP in first public appearance since shooting

• The crowd stayed standing for several minutes and chanted, "USA! USA! USA!" and then "Fight! Fight! Fight!" — a nod to what Trump shouted to the crowd at his rally on Saturday, moments after he was shot in the ear in an attempted assassination.
• One man on the stage at Trump's rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday was killed, and other attendees were injured.

The attack on Trump has unified and roused the GOP and only fueled an almost religious conviction that Trump is destined to return to the White House.

• Lee Greenwood sang "God Bless the U.S.A." — a Trump go-to — as the former president walked to the VIP seating area at the convention.
• Trump ultimately went to stand next to his new running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (D-Ohio), and spoke with his two sons, Eric and Don Jr.
• CNN's cameras caught Don Jr. appearing to tear up as his father entered the arena.

What they're saying: Trisha Turner, president of New York State Federation of Republican Women and a New York delegate, told Axios: "Usually, our party's having all that infighting and the Democrats usually do a pretty good job – I have to acknowledge — on unifying."
