Former President Trump called Rep. Anthony Gonzalez a "grandstanding RINO [Republican in name only]," as he advocated for GOP congressional challenger Max Miller, a former White House aide, at a rally in Wellington, Ohio, Saturday.

The big picture: In his first rally since leaving office, Trump said Gonzalez — one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach him over January's U.S. Capitol riot — was a "sellout." He spent much of the rally complaining about his election loss and criticizing the Biden administration on policies including immigration. Trump again hinted at a 2024 run.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved a request from Capitol Police to provide 100 D.C. National Guard troops in case law enforcement requires additional support at Saturday's "Justice for J6" rally at the Capitol.

Why it matters: Security preparations have ramped up ahead of the pro-Trump demonstration, where hundreds of protesters sympathetic to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack are expected to gather.

Multiple congressional offices will be closed Friday amid security precautions ahead of Saturday's rally in support of jailed Jan. 6 rioters, aides who have been instructed to work remotely tell Axios.

Why it matters: As the U.S. Capitol faces its first large-scale security test since the deadly attack, House and Senate offices are taking precautionary measures to protect staff as well as lawmakers.
