Axios PM

July 17, 2023
🕶️ Hello, Monday! Today's PM — edited by Erica Pandey — is 558 words, a 2-min. read. Thanks to Sheryl Miller for the copy edit.
1 big thing: Who young people blame

Young Americans are piling the blame for their student debt balances on conservatives.
- Why it matters: The high court's recent decisions on education, including student loans and affirmative action, could drive young voters to the polls, Axios' April Rubin reports.
The Supreme Court's six conservative justices recently shot down President Biden's loan forgiveness plan — and the coming payment resumption carries significant economic and political implications.
- Tens of millions of borrowers in the U.S. collectively owe more than $1 trillion.
🧮 By the numbers: 47% of respondents say the Supreme Court is responsible for their loans not being forgiven, according to a new Generation Lab poll of college students around the country.
- 38% blame Republicans, 10% blame Biden, 5% blame Democrats.
More than half of respondents disagree with the court's ruling last month.
- 17% agree with the decision; 21% are unsure.
🕶️ What to watch: Since the ruling, the Biden administration has vowed to continue tackling student loan debt and relieve some borrowers.
- The administration said Friday it would alleviate $39 billion of debt for 804,000 borrowers.
2. ⚖️ Axios first: Ramaswamy's court picks

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, now running as high as third in GOP presidential polls, says he'd consider nine potential nominees for the Supreme Court — including six conservative judges and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah).
- Why it matters: Ramaswamy remains a long shot to be the Republican nominee, but his list signals that as president he'd seek to push the court further to the right, Axios' Sophia Cai reports.
🔎 Zoom in: His picks have backed conservative arguments on abortion, transgender rights, religion and COVID mandates.
- Those are issues Ramaswamy, 37, has stressed in a campaign that often has been in line with the agenda of former President Trump, the GOP front-runner.
Ramaswamy's list includes several names that Trump previously has identified as Supreme Court contenders: Cruz, Lee, and U.S. Appeals Court Judges James Ho of Texas and Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania.
3. Catch me up

- 🇷🇺 Above: The aftermath of an alleged attack on the Crimea Bridge, which connects the Russian mainland with the Crimean Peninsula. The bridge holds vital strategic and symbolic value for Russia, providing a key supply route for Russian troops in their ongoing assault on Ukraine. Go deeper.
- 🧠 An experimental drug from Eli Lilly, Donanemab, slows progression of Alzheimer's in patients by about a third, according to trial data presented today at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Amsterdam. That rate doubles to 60% if the drug is started when patients are only mildly impaired, per Reuters.
- 🛻 Ford is cutting prices of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup by about 17% to fend off competition from Tesla and GM, Axios' Nathan Bomey reports. The base-version starting price is dropping to $49,995 from $59,974. Price details.
