A competitive congressional race is unfolding in Northern Virginia's 10th District over a key open seat centered in Loudoun County.
The big picture: Every race matters as Republicans race to gain seats and expand control of the U.S. House, which Dems are vying to flip.
Who's running: Mike Clancy (R) vs. Suhas Subramanyam (D)
🔴 Mike Clancy: The tech executive, lawyer and conservative Newsmax commentator ran for his party's nomination for the seat in 2022.
- His campaign is "fighting to restore America" via priorities like securing the southern border, restoring fiscal "sanity," revitalizing the economy by loosening regulations on energy production and small businesses, and funding law enforcement to improve safety.
🔵 Suhas Subramanyam: The first-generation Indian-American and volunteer firefighter/EMT served as a White House technology policy adviser under then-President Obama and was elected to the Virginia Legislature in 2019.
- His campaign priorities include protecting women's reproductive rights, supporting responsible gun ownership and safety laws, promoting environmental protections and renewable energy, and boosting health care access.
Flashback: The district's Democratic primary was one of the messiest of the year, according to WAMU, with a dozen candidates fighting for the nomination, a flood of money from outside groups and sexual harassment allegations against Del. Dan Helmer days before the primary.
- Subramanyam has received an endorsement from incumbent Rep. Jennifer Wexton, who declined to seek a fourth term after being diagnosed with a rare and debilitating neurological disorder.
Zoom out: The Nov. 5 presidential and U.S. Senate elections are expected to boost voter turnout overall, and early voting is already underway in Virginia.
- The Old Dominion hasn't gone for a Republican presidential candidate in 20 years, and multiple recent polls show Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Trump by several points.
