Here's how many 'blackout' license plates Minnesotans bought so far

• Applications for the specialty plates, which cost about $45 more than the normal version, debuted online on Jan. 1 and at registrars' offices on Jan. 2.

By the numbers: Minnesota's Driver & Vehicle Services division processed 1,656 requests for the plates by the end of the first full day of in-person sales, a spokesperson told Axios.

• That's just under 20% of the roughly 8,500 total plates issued over the same period.

Between the lines: High interest could be a boost to the state agency's bottom line. While sales of many of the state's 120-plus specialty plate designs benefit specific causes, fees from the blackout versions will support DVS operations.

By the number: Sales of new plates commemorating pro sports teams and the Lions Club are trailing the buzzy blackout design so far, DVS data shows:
