Waymo could bring self-driving taxis to Pinellas

Driving the news: The service is limited to Waymo employees for now, and no public launch date has been announced for Tampa. The company started mapping the city's streets in December.

• Waymo's fleet consists of all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles, equipped with sensors and cameras mounted on their roofs. In June, the company purchased a warehouse in Town 'n' Country to house them.
• St. Petersburg spokesperson Samantha Bequer told the Times on Wednesday that Waymo met with the city's transportation department about expanding into Pinellas County.

Zoom out: Waymo is open to the public in Miami and Orlando, as well as Phoenix, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Nashville.

• The rollout has drawn complaints in some areas. Waymo cars have snarled traffic in San Francisco, and in March, one stopped in the path of an ambulance responding to a mass shooting in Austin, per the Times.
