Tampa Bay Sun kick off title defense this weekend

The Tampa Bay Sun FC are coming off a championship-winning season and open their title defense on the road this weekend.

Why it matters: The Sun's USL Super League title helped the region's newest pro team quickly establish itself in Tampa Bay.

It also sparked talk of a stadium in Ybor City, though uncertainty surrounding the Rays has complicated that push.

Catch up quick: The Sun capped the 2024-25 season with a record of 14-6-10, becoming the USLS's inaugural champs and the region's first pro women's sports team to win a title.

Driving the news: Tampa Bay's season begins 7pm Saturday, on the road against Brooklyn FC. You can stream the game on Peacock.

State of play: The team returns to Blake High School's Riverfront Stadium this season with 14 home matches on the schedule; the first is Aug. 30 against a new in-state rival, Sporting Club Jacksonville.

The team has retained some key players from last season, including captain and former USF star Jordyn Listro, and Championship Final MVP and Land O' Lakes native Sydny Nasello.
But it's also had at least a dozen changes, per Creative Loafing.
