The Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners wants to build an indoor sports arena on land surrounding the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) on East Fowler Avenue.
Why it matters: The sports arena could attract "high-value, mixed-use development," according to county staff, as well as boost the museum's attendance and support new hotels, restaurants and retail in the area.
- "This will be the catalyst for the most transformative economic development project Hillsborough County's ever been associated with," said Commissioner Ken Hagan (R).
Catch up quick: MOSI sits on 74 acres, only 7 of which are in use. In 2023, the board revived talks to redevelop the open land and tapped Alliant Partners last year to lead the effort.
- The board also expressed interest in building an indoor sports hub and directed staff in 2024 to explore potential sites. Staff returned with recommendations on May 7, with MOSI as the top contender.
- The museum stood out for its access to major roads, no land acquisition cost and the potential to repurpose buildings for lower construction costs. Commissioners signed off, 7–0.
Zoom in: The plans for the 175,000-square-foot complex include 12 basketball courts and 24 volleyball courts.
- The initial design will use $2 million in BP Oil Spill settlement money. Remaining costs will be covered by the county's half-cent sales tax and hotel bed tax.
The big picture: The Tampa Bay Sports Commission estimates that the complex will generate 44,000 hotel stays each year and contribute $24.5 million to local businesses.
