How St. Petersburg residents can get a free tree

The city of St. Petersburg is offering free trees to residents.

Why it matters: The giveaway kicks off the city's Community Canopy Initiative, an effort to plant 1,000 trees across the city within a year, officials announced.

How to get one: City residents can head to one of two locations from 9am-noon this Saturday to take advantage: Walter Fuller Recreation Center or Frank Pierce Recreation Center.

Residents can pick up one tree per household on a first-come, first-served basis.
Four species will be offered, contingent on availability: South Florida slash pine, sand live oak, sweetgum and sugarberry. All are native to Florida.
Soil and mulch will also be available, so bring a bucket.
