If there was any doubt that Tampa Bay is a red region, it was squashed three weeks ago.
Why it matters: Once considered the swingiest region in a swing state, Hillsborough and Pinellas county voters helped deliver a firm Florida victory for President-elect Donald Trump.
By the numbers: Since 2016, Hillsborough has shifted nearly 10 points to the right, despite Democrats maintaining a slight registration advantage. Trump won the county this year by a margin of about 3%.
- The rightward shift was less dramatic in Pinellas — about four points since 2016 — but Trump took a more decisive lead this year, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris by more than 5%.
The big picture: Tampa Bay is in line with the rest of the state. Since 2016, 90% of Florida counties have shifted more Republican.
Zoom in: Tampa Bay's two largest cities bucked the trend and went blue, with some Tampa and St. Petersburg precincts going for Harris by more than 88%.
Yes, but: Even in these liberal havens, many neighborhoods helped carry the president-elect, per an Axios Tampa Bay analysis of precinct-level voting data.
