The state wants to add pickleball to these two Tampa Bay parks

Tampa Bay's Hillsborough River State Park and Honeymoon Island State Park are among the parks the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has targeted for new recreational facilities.

• The department says the proposed additions strike a balance between its "dual responsibilities" to preserve Florida's natural landscapes but also to promote "outdoor recreation opportunities."

Zoom in: In Hillsborough, the department recommends the construction of up to four pickleball courts beside the park's swimming pool and bathhouse complex, as well as a disc golf course south of it.

• The pickleball courts and the course would be available to all visitors, with the latter also offering "scenic pathways."
• In Honeymoon Island State Park, the department suggests four pickleball courts near the upper part of the park's South Beach Access Area. It would use about 7,200 square feet of land.
