Get your party hat on — a range of events honoring Latino cultures and communities will take place in San Francisco throughout the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month, which starts Sunday and ends Oct. 15.
State of play: Latinos, who make up about 15% of San Francisco's population, have a rich history here, from leading labor movements and building up the economy to deepening our culinary landscape and more.
- The Office of Economic & Workforce Development created an online resource spotlighting an array of small businesses and community groups whose work ensures that San Francisco's Latino community continues to thrive.
Festivities include: The El Grito de Dolores (Mexican Independence Day) celebration, organized in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco.
- Sunday from 4-9pm in Civic Center Plaza
10% discount promotions at Bernal Heights restaurant Los Yaquis, which is celebrating its five-year anniversary with different meal specials throughout the week.
- Sept. 17
Calle 24 Latino Cultural District's Fiestas de las Américas, which will feature live performances, food vendors and traditional papel picado decor.
- Sept. 21, 11am-6pm along 24th Street
Taboo salon's opening celebration. The new wellness center is led by Ismael de Luna, the owner of Healing Cuts, and offers haircuts, nail services and massage.
- Sept. 21, 3-6pm at 2352 Market Street
The Afro Latinx Concert Series Festival. Its line-up includes Óskar Ly & Rumbalú, Chuchito Valdés, La Dame Blanche and DJ Leydi.
- Sept. 21, Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 at Ruth Williams Opera House
The city's Latino Heritage Month Celebration and Award Ceremony, which Mayor London Breed will host alongside treasurer José Cisneros, assessor-recorder Joaquín Torres and Supervisor Myrna Melgar.
- This year's theme is "El Sueño de San Francisco Vive," or "The Dream of San Francisco Lives."
- Sept. 26 from 5:30pm–9pm at at City Hall
Self-guided Taco Tours of the Mission that will highlight the beating heart of the Latino food scene.
- Oct. 4, noon to 8pm starting at La Corneta Taqueria
A series of public screenings spotlighting local Latino filmmakers, presented by Film SF and the SFO Video Arts and Public Library.
- Available through Oct. 15 at the SFO Museum in the international terminal.
Zoom out: Hispanic Heritage Month was created in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson.
- Celebrations kick off every year on Sept. 15, which corresponds with the anniversaries of independence for Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Chile.
What we're watching: The San Francisco Latino Historical Society is working to document Latino enclaves not previously included in the city's historical records — part of a larger effort to recognize, correct and preserve Latino history in the Bay Area.
