San Diego to host LA28 Olympic soccer at Snapdragon

Driving the news: The LA28 organizing committee announced San Diego would be among the host cities for the men's and women's soccer tournaments.

• The MLS stadiums in Columbus, New York, Nashville, St. Louis and San Jose will also host matches.

Zoom in: It's not yet clear how many games Snapdragon Stadium will host, when they'll be or which men's and women's team will play there.

• The group stage and knockout matches lead up to the July 28 and 29 finals at the Rose Bowl, near Los Angeles.
• More details on the schedule are expected to be released in April.

What they're saying: "This is a huge moment for our city and everyone who believes in the unifying power of sports," Mayor Todd Gloria said at a press event Tuesday, per the Union-Tribune. "San Diego is ready for the world stage. We are a sports city, we are a soccer city and we are without question a global city."

• "Bringing Olympic football group stage and knockout matches to stadiums across the United States means more fans will witness this global event and experience the Olympic spirit firsthand," Shana Ferguson, LA28 chief of sport and games delivery officer, said in a news release.

Fun fact: During the Olympics, Snapdragon Stadium will be called "San Diego Stadium," with similar city-oriented naming conventions at the other host sites.

• On the international stage, stadiums are often required to forgo sponsor names and signage to avoid conflicting with branding deals.

Also, Lower Trestles will host surfing events for the 2028 games.

• Tickets are set to go on sale in April.
