San Antonio restaurants are celebrating pollinators in September

San Antonio restaurants and chefs are offering pollinator-inspired food and drinks throughout September ahead of the city's Monarch Butterfly & Pollinator Festival.

Why it matters: The September promotion, dubbed Migratory Month, brings awareness to the essential role pollinators play in our food system.

The big picture: One of every three bites of food is made possible by pollinators like butterflies and bees, the festival organizers say.

Menu items around San Antonio include:

Best Quality Daughter: Smashed cucumbers with heirloom tomatoes, sesame garlic dressing and cilantro
Geranium Club: Lemon berry basil cake
Miss Chickpea's Bake Shop: Seasonal coffee drinks named for Texas pollinators
Pharm Table: Sweet potato waffle with fermented hot honey, peach and fig

What's next: The free Monarch Butterfly & Pollinator Festival returns to Brackenridge Park Oct. 3.
