A new interactive map shows the most dangerous roads in San Antonio.
Why it matters: Knowing where the most severe and fatal crashes occur in the city is the first step toward reducing them.
Zoom in: Culebra Road, running from the West Side near downtown to past Loop 1604, is by far the city's most dangerous. It's long been known as the deadliest road in San Antonio, and the map shows by just how much.
By the numbers: There were 116 fatal or serious injury crashes along the 15.6 miles of Culebra from 2018 to 2022, per the map, created by the city's Transportation Department.
- The second most dangerous road in the city is Bandera Road, stretching from near Woodlawn Lake to Leon Valley. It saw 38 fatal or serious crashes along 3.7 miles during the same period.
The big picture: Most of the deadliest roads in the city are on the West and South sides, areas that have historically not received the same level of investment from the city as the more affluent North Side.
What they're saying: "This dashboard offers residents an unprecedented level of visibility into where the most serious crashes occur," Catherine "Cat" Hernandez, the city's transportation director, said in a statement.
What's next: The city is in the midst of a new public awareness campaign aimed at reducing pedestrian deaths in three major high-injury corridors.
- Keep an eye out for life-sized silhouettes at pedestrian crossing points along Zarzamora Street, Fredericksburg Road and W.W. White Road.
- And, of course, watch out for pedestrians themselves.
