San Antonio snags federal grant for Culebra Road safety improvements

State of play: The $8 million comes from a competitive grant program funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

• It will cover planning, design and environmental work along five miles of Culebra Road from Loop 410 to General McMullen Drive.
• It's connected to a larger city bond project voters passed in 2022.

Zoom in: The street is slated to receive:

• ADA-compliant sidewalks and crossings
• Dedicated bike paths
• Improved transit stops
• Trees and other landscaping.

Zoom out: More than 50 fatal crashes have occurred on Culebra Road in the last decade, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) said in a statement

• A 45-year-old father of five died after a hit-and-run on Culebra Road last month, KENS 5 reported.

How it works: The city plans to reduce crash deaths and injuries by updating traffic lanes so that drivers can see farther ahead, per federal officials.

• New native plants should also help with flood control.

What they're saying: "These funds will play an important role [in] providing a safer transportation environment," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in a statement.
