San Antonio ramen scene gets a downtown addition in Kaedama Battleship

👋 Hey, it's Megan! I'm a ramen convert, so I was eager to check out the new Kaedama Battleship restaurant downtown.

Dig in: The noodle bar from the team behind Hot Joy and Little Death opened late last month.

The vibe: It offers casual counter service with a clean and sophisticated atmosphere — think light wooden tables and all-black dishes.

What to try: I grabbed a bowl of the double miso ramen ($16), the veggie choice, and added crispy tofu ($6).

• The broth was deeply-flavored and it came with marinated shiitake mushrooms that rounded out the umami dish. The tofu was fried to a perfect crisp.
• My only complaint was that the vegan bowl should come with a vegan protein, as the meat-filled ramens do, instead of charging extra for an add-on.

Fun fact: "Kaedama" is Japanese for "more noodles."

The bottom line: In a city with already great ramen competition, Kaedama Battleship is an early standout.
