Sweater weather is here — not that we needed to tell you — but we do have the scoop on how long fall temperatures will stick around.
Why it matters: After weeks of summer overstaying its welcome, San Antonio is finally feeling fall temperatures — the coolest since April — just in time for Halloween trick-or-treating.
What's happening: A cold front swept across South Central Texas Tuesday, ushering in below-average temps through the weekend.
- Winds followed the front, with gusts up to 45 mph in the Hill Country, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
- A red flag warning and wind advisory are in effect until 7pm Wednesday, meaning strong, dry winds could spread fires quickly. Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations and avoid burning or tossing cigarettes outside.
State of play: The front is expected to bring lows in the upper 30s to 50s over the next few days, Orlando Bermudez, NWS meteorologist for the San Antonio–Austin region, tells Axios.
- Friday evening (6–8pm), expect upper 60s to low 70s — perfect trick-or-treating weather.
- "We're expecting a really nice weekend coming up," Bermudez says.
The big picture: "We probably won't see the 90s for the rest of the fall," Bermudez says.
Between the lines: This is the strongest front of the season so far, but it's right on schedule — late October cold snaps are typical for San Antonio, Bermudez says.
- Last year, lows didn't dip into the 40s — what's expected Thursday morning — until mid-November.
What's next: Looking to take advantage of the cooler temperatures? Diwali San Antonio lights up Arneson Theatre and Hemisfair on Saturday.
- Día de los Muertos celebrations take over Pearl Saturday and Sunday.
