If I had failed to look up while walking, I might have missed out on a hauntingly fun new bar.
The latest: Southtown House of Spirits opened on Halloween in the former home of a second-floor cigar shop on South Alamo Street.
- I was wandering around the neighborhood with a friend, looking for our next pit stop, when we spotted an alluring neon sign beckoning us to come upstairs and drink some potions (um, I mean, cocktails).
The vibe: The multi-room bar is retrofitted with lots of vintage wooden furniture that looks like it's set up for a séance in the Victorian era. The lighting comes from multiple dim lamps, some with pink lightbulbs, and electric candles.
- The doilies and thin lace curtains blowing in the windows make it feel perfectly haunted.
What to drink: The Boo Berry Smash ($15) is a bourbon drink with berry simple syrup, lemon and mint. It's refreshing with a hint of sweetness.
Pro tip: Make sure to check out the bathroom for some super-cute ghost wallpaper.
If you go: Head to 727 S. Alamo St., and look for the outdoor staircase on the side of the building.
