U-Haul data shows where San Antonio newcomers are from

Californians make a lot of headlines for moving to Texas, but people from Phoenix are quietly topping the list of newcomers to San Antonio, new U-Haul data shows.

Zoom in: The mass exodus from California to Texas has been widely reported, often attributed to factors like Texas' lack of a state income tax and liberal California politics.

But we don't hear as much about people leaving Phoenix for the Lone Star State.

What they did: U-Haul looked at the one-way rentals for the first half of 2024 and listed the incoming traffic data by states in the 25 most populous cities.

What they found: Denver, Los Angeles, Colorado Springs and Oklahoma City rounded out the top five cities for one-way rentals to San Antonio.

Houston took the top spot for people relocating to the Alamo City from cities within Texas.
California, Florida, Colorado, Arizona and Louisiana are the top five states for one-way rentals to San Antonio.

Between the lines: San Antonio continuously tops the list of U.S. cities with the most newcomers.

The city of San Antonio gained nearly 22,000 new residents from July 2022 to July 2023, per a U.S. Census Bureau report released in May.

The intrigue: With nearly half of relocations happening between Memorial and Labor days, we're in peak moving season.
