📸 S.A. snapshots: Mural honors migrants

A colorful mural shows migrants crossing through a river and over razor wire to reach the other side, with monarch butterflies flying above them and a star-lit sky.

👋 Megan here. On my recent amble along the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River, I stopped to see a new mural at Mission County Park.

Zoom in: The mural honors the 53 immigrants who died in 2022 in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer found on the South Side.

What they're saying: "We spent many hours doing research on the migrant experience," De La Cruz said recently when unveiling the mural.

  • "We wanted just the memory of the struggle of coming over here, of sacrificing everything for a better future," Rivas said.
  • The monarchs represent immigration as a natural process, De la Tierra said.
