First look at the San Antonio Zoo's new entrance

The San Antonio Zoo will look a lot different the next time you visit. Giant butterfly art, a lemur skywalk and picado-lined pathways have replaced the modest admission building that had been around since the 1950s.

Details: The overhaul, estimated at $13 million, creates a vibrant gateway intended to set the tone for the rest of the zoo.

The new space features a cafe in the restored monkey house, which dates back to 1936, according to plans shared with Axios in April.
The new entrance has dedicated entrances for school groups and enhanced accessibility for all visitors.

Flashback: The zoo has come a long way from what it looked like in 1939.

What they're saying: "The new entrance is world-class and truly represents what is happening with the transformation of our zoo. Guests will find it more accessible, more functional, beautiful and awe-inspiring upon arrival to San Antonio Zoo," president and CEO Tim Morrow tells Axios.

What's next: The new look leads the way for an upcoming event space on the property that will feature a gorilla habitat, he said. The event center is expected to open in 2025.
