The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is marking America's 250th anniversary with two free summer festivals that build community and shine a light on the stories that continue to define America.
Why it's important: The ideas that led to the American Revolution and a new democratic government began right here in Virginia.
- The VMHC's work highlights the full American story, from the household names of America's Founding Fathers to the everyday Virginians who made it all possible.
First things first: The VMHC's flagship America 250 events this summer are free and family-friendly. Plan trips around:
⛵Richmond SailFest
June 12–14
A magnificent international fleet of tall ships and military ships is sailing into some of America's biggest ports — including Richmond. On deck:
- Tours of three sailing vessels with free registration encouraged.
- Traveling exhibitions from VMHC.
- Live art from Studio Two Three and a mobile museum from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
- Historical re-enactors throughout the event.
- Live performances of 1800s sea shanties, Irish dance, Native American flute, Japanese drums and West African dance.

June 25–28
This immersive experience set against the museum's historic façade features video art projections,, pyrotechnics and more — all tied to America's 250th anniversary. Highlights include:
- A festive block party atmosphere to enhance the four-night run of shows.
- Live music from local bands, art displays, crafts and family games.
- After-hours access to VMHC galleries and exhibitions.
- A petting zoo, a bounce house and food trucks to fuel the fun.

- Thursday, June 25: Witness expert craftsmen Josh Manning and Ozzy B. Freidline craft distinctive Virginia salt-glazed pottery.
- Friday, June 26: Join Martha Jones Carter, Jacqueline Carter and the Kuumba African American Quilting Guild for a special session on African American quilting tradition and practice.
- Saturday, June 27: See historic instrument-making practices from the Blue Ridge Mountain region with Jackson Cunningham and Raistlin Brabson.
