The flashing police lights and street barricades that greet weekend crowds in Shockoe Bottom could soon be swapped out with metal posts.
Why it matters: Neighborhood advocates say the police barricades meant to keep the nightlife district safe can also make it look dangerous, potentially discouraging visitors and investment even when crime isn't occurring.
Driving the news: Richmond wants to spend nearly $100,000 to install 40 removable metal bollards across five intersections along 17th and 18th streets using state violence-reduction funding, per city documents.
- The bollards would replace police cars and temporary barriers, giving officers more time to patrol on foot — a move supported by RPD, the Shockoe Institute, Shockoe Partnership and the area's nightlife liaison.
- The Planning Commission approved the proposal this week with conditions, including addressing traffic flow and making sure the posts fit the historic neighborhood.
The catch: City planners warn the bollards could create traffic dead ends, restrict parking and potentially require towing vehicles left in closed areas.
Between the lines: The street closures aren't new, though. Police already block off parts of Shockoe on the weekends, typically between 9pm and 4am.
- The safety concerns aren't either. The nightlife district has experienced a spate of shootings and other violence for decades, including a mass shooting in February.
What's next: The bollards could go up next spring, per WWBT, but a firm date hasn't been announced.
