Richmond's Mayo Bridge is losing two lanes

Driving the news: The city will resurface the 113-year-old bridge Tuesday, Oct. 13 through Oct. 23, closing two of its four lanes daily from 9am-6pm.

• After resurfacing, crews will restripe the bridge to two travel lanes — one in each direction — and the city will use traffic data to help design its replacement.
• It's unclear how long the pilot will last.

The intrigue: VDOT's current concept for the years-in-the-making $190 million replacement also calls for two lanes, plus dedicated bike lanes and a separate pedestrian walkway.

Stunning stat: A July VDOT-commissioned study projects that reducing Mayo to two lanes could shift up to 39% of its rush-hour traffic to other bridges by 2045, potentially worsening congestion nearby.

What's next: VDOT will unveil its latest replacement concepts Oct. 21, 5-7pm, at PlanRVA's Manchester office, with public comment open through Nov. 1.
