More stink bugs are invading Virginia homes this fall

The big picture: Virginians, including Richmond-area residents, have taken to social media in recent days to complain about a sudden stink bug invasion — some after going years without seeing them.

• Kuhar, who has studied the invasive brown marmorated stink bug for at least two decades, spotted higher-than-usual populations on Virginia crops this summer.
• That's led to slightly more adult bugs this fall.

The intrigue: Virginia's drought may be partly to blame.

• Kuhar says the dry weather may have reduced the fungi and other microbes that naturally kill them, allowing more of them to survive the summer.

What to do: Seal cracks around windows and doors, repair screens and check weather stripping for gaps.

• If they're already inside: Vacuum them up or knock them into soapy water.
• Most that settle in will stay hidden until the spring, though Kuhar says some may pop out during winter in search of water.

Be smart: Stink bugs don't bite or damage homes, but they release a strong smell when crushed.

The bottom line: Don't squish them.
