Short Pump traffic relief moves closer with new I-64 exit

A new I-64 exit at North Gayton Road has finally secured the funding needed to build it.

Why it matters: Short Pump drivers could have some long-awaited traffic relief on the way, taking pressure off the notoriously congested West Broad Street interchange — a hellscape during rush hour.

The big picture: The $157 million project is now fully funded, according to VDOT's latest plan. That includes $63 million from the Central Virginia Transportation Authority, which recently approved $709,000 to begin surveying the site this fall.

The West Broad Street exit currently funnels drivers headed toward Short Pump Town Center and Innsbrook.
The new one will briefly shift traffic to the left side of the road, making it easier to get on and off I-64 without crossing oncoming traffic.

Yes, but: Construction isn't expected to start until spring 2028 and wrap up until winter 2031.

So Short Pump commuters still have a few more years of suffering left to go.
