The Kroger on Midlothian near Winterfield is getting a bigger and bolder section for Ukrop's products.
Why it matters: It's like Ukrop's Super Markets never left us.
State of play: The new and improved section for Ukrop's HomeStyle Foods products is part of the Midlo Kroger's renovation, Ukrop's spokesperson Susan Rowe tells Axios.
- It's part of a broader move by the company to expand its in-store signage at Kroger stores in the region, starting in April with the new Mechanicville Mega-Kroger.
- Scaled-down versions are also in Charleston, W.Va. and Yorktown, Rowe says.
What to expect: A whole section dedicated to Ukrop's cakes, pies, rolls, biscuits, chicken salad, prepared dinners and yes, of course, rainbow cookies — rising in place of the Midlo Kroger's in-store Starbucks.
- The section is expected to open around Labor Day, ahead of the store's full renovation completion, slated for late September.
Flashback: Ukrop's Super Markets was Richmond's beloved, homegrown grocery chain for more than 70 years.
- The company sold its stores in 2009 to the parent company of Martin's, which took over more than 20 Ukrop's stores in Richmond the following year.
- Martin's later sold its Richmond stores to Publix.
The bottom line: If we can't have Ukrop's, we'll take the bigger sections.
