Richmond is the 20th-fittest city in America, new ranking says

Fun fact: That’s the biggest jump of any city in the rankings, putting us ahead of New York (No. 26), Los Angeles (55) and Miami (39), which is so known for its fitness obsession that it has a Muscle Beach.

How it works: The report is from the American College of Sports Medicine and the Elevance Health Foundation.

• It looks at parks and recreation infrastructure, environmental conditions, residents' health indicators, and more across the 100 biggest cities.

By the numbers: Community is doing some of the heavy lifting in Richmond’s overall score.

• The city ranked 18th for community and environment compared with 40th for personal health.
• Richmond also saw a 17% increase in good-air-quality days, one of the biggest improvements nationally.
• And it’s ranked No. 1 for the number of tennis or pickleball courts per 20,000 residents.

Yes, but: Our lungs could use some gains. Richmond’s 13.3% adult asthma rate was among the 10 highest of the 100 cities studied, per the report.

The bottom line: We might have beaten Virginia Beach (61) and Chesapeake (89), but we have a ways to go to push Arlington out of the top spot.
