Carytown gets a Czech-inspired twist on ice cream cones

Carytown is about to get a little sweeter with this weekend's opening of Crispy Cones, an Idaho-based ice cream cone chain inspired by Czech pastries.
Why it matters: Crispy Cones specializes in hand-rolled and rotisserie-grilled dough cones instead of crunchy, hard ones.
State of play: Idaho couple Jeremy and Kaitlyn Carlson started Crispy Cones in 2012, building on the cones he enjoyed during a church mission in Prague, per Sun Valley magazine.
- The cones were a hit in Idaho, but it wasn't until the duo took their idea to ABC's "Shark Tank" a decade later — and secured an investment — that they were able to expand nationally.
- Their concept: An Americanized version of the Czech rotisserie-fired dough cones, covered in cinnamon and sugar and filled with soft-serve ice cream and spreads.
How it works: Pick a cone, either traditional or a specialty flavor, like Dubai chocolate.
- Pick a spread, like Nutella or peanut butter.
- Fill it with your choice of soft serve.
- Top it however you like. Or don't.
Carytown prices weren't available, but at other stores cones range from $8 to $11.
If you go: The Carytown location — now one of roughly 50 outposts nationwide — opens Friday, July 24, in the old Carytown Burgers & Fries spot at 3449 W. Cary St.
- It's open Monday-Thursday, noon-11pm; Friday and Saturday, noon-midnight; Sunday, 1-6pm.
