There's a newish make-your-own ramen bar in Short Pump.
Why it matters: The Ramyun Zip has floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with over 100 different ramen flavors.
The big picture: The Korean spot opened its Richmond location in February after launching in Northern Virginia.
- Flavors are organized by mild, medium, spicy, extra spicy, halal and vegan.
- Options range from beef bulgogi and kimchi to lobster and curry chicken.
- Additional toppings include crab meat, fried tofu, veggie dumplings, meatballs and more.
How it works: Pick a ramen ($5.50), choose if you want unlimited toppings for another $3 (worth it), then pay at the counter.
- Take out the ramen from the bag, add the toppings (but save the cheese for last so it doesn't burn) and then head to the stations to add the boiling water.
- Stir every 10 seconds.
Pro tip: Make sure the bowl is actually under the water spout before you click the button to start so water doesn't spill everywhere.
The intrigue: With tax and tip, my order came to a little over $10 — which I get is higher than the $2 cups you can get at the grocery store.
- But the fun lies in the experience and turning instant ramen into an outing. And I'd do it again.
Zoom out: If you're not into ramen, you can try their Korean wings, chicken bites, dumplings, fried shrimp or Korean ice cream selection.
If you go: It's at 11573 W. Broad St. and open Sunday-Thursday, 11am-10pm, and until 11pm from Friday-Saturday.
